YA Fest: Favorite YA books from the past year (2014/2015)?
Martina Boone: The Winner’s Curse by Marie Rutkowski, Half Bad by Sally Green, All the Bright Places by Jennifer Niven
YA Fest: How/why did you start writing?
Martina: I’ve always wanted to write, but didn’t really think about writing for young adults until my daughter and I discovered YA lit together. She has a learning disability, so she had to work so hard to get through a page that reading was anything but a pleasure. Then she discovered YA paranormal books and dystopians and fell in love. I read the books with her, and by the time we got through a stack of them, she was a reader and I was determined to write a YA novel.
YA Fest: One piece of advice for young writers?
Martina: Read critically, as much as you can in many different genres. Write every day and give yourself time to experiment. Don’t be in a hurry. You can take as much time as you like to write your first book, but once that is published, your next book is due in six months.
YA Fest: What are you currently working on? (Give us your elevator pitch!)
Martina: Rebecca meets Gone Girl meets Fifty Shades. And also a YA fantasy that I’m only just now brewing. : )
YA Fest: Are your characters/stories inspired by real people/events?
Martina: Inspiration comes from everywhere, but while I will sometimes take a kernel of an idea from real life, the characters and situations take on their own identities and become completely organic.
