Get to know more of the wonderful authors that are going to be signing at YA Fest in October 2015.

Kate Karyus Quinn

Author of (Don’t You) Forget About Me and Another Little Piece.

YA Fest: Favorite YA authors?
Kate Karyus Quinn: I am a big fan of Maggie Stiefvater’s THE SCORPIO RACES and The Raven Cycle, Holly Black’s THE COLDEST GIRL IN COLDTOWN, Rick Yancey’s THE FIFTH WAVE trilogy, and everything Stephanie Perkins writes forever and always.

YA Fest: Favorite YA books from the past year (2014/2015)?
Kate: A MADNESS SO DISCREET by Mindy McGinnis is definitely one of my favorite books of 2015. I also really enjoyed NO PLACE TO FALL by Jaye Robin Brown, THIS SHATTERED WORLD by Amie Kaufman and Meagan Spooner, and BLOOD AND SALT by Kim Liggett.
YA Fest: How/why did you start writing?
Kate: I started writing when I was in third grade. I didn’t get really serious about it until I was in my late twenties though after I’d had my son and he was regularly napping and I was a bit bored. Although I’d started many novels I’d never actually finished one. But then I did! And it was great. So I did it again. And again. I imagine I’ll keep doing it until someone makes me stop.

YA Fest: One piece of advice for young writers?
Kate: Read what makes you happy and read a lot. Then go write the book that you want to read but are unable to find on the shelves.

YA Fest: What are you currently working on?  (Give us your elevator pitch!)
Kate: I am currently working on a bunch of different things, but nothing is yet at the point where I can talk about it.

YA Fest: Are your characters/stories inspired by real people/events?
Kate: Noooooo. Real events/stories/people influence me, of course, but it’s then all spun around inside my brain and spitted out as something so different that even I can’t guess the actual source material by the time it lands on the page.
